Do You Have a Plan?

Do you have a weekly routine? Or even a daily one?

I think so many of us these days get through life just bouncing from one thing to another. There is no real plan of any kind. The only structure that any of us have is our work schedule.

You know, habits and routines can go a long way in changing that.

And while we talk mostly about our homes here, it’s a good idea to have a routine in place for the rest of your life too.

So many people object to structuring too much of their time. They feel like it leaves no room for fun or just doing whatever they want.

The Freedom of Structure

Freedom and structure sound like contradictory terms, but in fact, they are not.

Structuring your life properly, will allow you to get the important things done without much thought and still have plenty of time left to do what you’d like.

And that, to me, sounds pretty good.

Imagine having a set list of tasks waiting for you, no matter what day it is. Some days there may be quite a few, others, not so much.

Calendar, schedule, tablet

All have been designed with some thought towards your schedule, so that the days with very little to do task wise happen on days when you’re super busy at work, or maybe days that are very light so that your whole day is easy.

Your decision. And it’s already been made for you and put in place.

No getting up and wondering what to do, expending mental energy on arranging your day. It’s already done and predictable!

The Power of Habit

Routines and habits are the magic that make such things possible.

Habits are wonderful because things get done practically without your noticing it. It’s so much a part of your life that you don’t even think about it.

String a bunch of those habits together in a thoughtful way and you have a routine.

One thing that may be confusing is the difference between a daily routine and a weekly one.

After all, seven days of doing daily chores makes a week, right?

I suppose a good argument could be made for that. After all, what makes a weekly routine any different?

Daily, Weekly: What’s the Difference?

To be clear, daily routines are done on a daily basis; weekly ones only once a week.

You may not differentiate them in your head at all, and that’s OK, as long as they are getting done.

I suspect that a few things you think of as daily chores are really weekly ones.

Let’s take a look.


  • Dishes
  • A quick cleaning of the kitchen and bathrooms
  • Making meals
  • Straightening up and putting things away
  • Organizing the mail


  • Paying the bills
  • Sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping the floors
  • Grocery shopping
  • Deeper cleaning of the kitchen and bathroom
  • Changing the sheets
  • Dusting
  • Running errands

Some things, like laundry, may fall in between. It may need doing more often than once a week, but not every day.

Putting it Together

Most of the daily stuff, believe it or not, can be accomplished in an hour or two. And that can be spread out through the day, not done all at once.

Unload the dishwasher in the morning, and throw a load of laundry in. (In our newly married days, when we couldn’t afford a dryer, I would do a load of laundry and hang it on the line before I left for work, and then pray it didn’t rain.)

Mail can get sorted very quickly, especially if you put a system in place so you know where things go.

The kitchen’s big clean up and wipe down is usually after dinner, and by then the laundry from the morning should be in the dryer.

And by the way, we’re not living in the fifties anymore. If you get your clean clothes out of a laundry basket all week long, join the club. And invest in a steamer to get the wrinkles out.

The bathroom wipe down is pretty quick, and not so gross if you keep up with it.

If It’s Monday

This is where the weekly routine comes into play.

Take a look at your days and see where these tasks fit.

Some may take a little longer, some you may want to group together. For instance, use Saturday mornings as your time to get the big things done, and then you have the afternoon for family or fun time.

You may want to combine grocery shopping and running errands into the same time slot, so you’re making one trip.

And I highly recommend subscription services to take care of a lot of your shopping needs.

Similarly, banking and bill paying can be done online. Safely. I promise.
